Ship Shapes Annihilation

The fluid lines of sailing ships inspired the design of the entry, which features a two-storey, gently curving wall opposite a dramatic panel that sweeps down the ceiling behind the reception desk. Built of Douglas fir, the planks had to be soaked and formed like the ribs of a ship, presenting a challenge for builders, who tested a variety of processes and materials to find the right combination for the job.

These organic, rounded forms were used to define all of the collaborative spaces in the building, where group meetings occur. Rectilinear forms were used in individuals' work areas, such as office cubicles, says Hill.

A warm, home-like atmosphere was specified by the client and Redziner says he was told not to design anything that he wouldn't want in his own home. As a result, work areas are defined as project rooms, living rooms and play rooms.

Project rooms are where teams develop advertising compaigns for clients. There are several on each floor and they are not entirely enclosed, with the walls stopping well short of the ceiling.

Immediately outside of these rooms are seating areas called living rooms, with low sofas and coffee tables, where more informal discussions and idea development can occur. The play rooms have billiard tables, table-tennis tables and a bar, all intended to support the creative process.

All of the furniture, workstations and conference room tables continue the theme of the waterfront warehouse, and are reminiscent of the simple, square lines of shipping crates. The wood furniture was custom built by Marmol Radziner.

'We designed the entire space in model size to experiment with the creative tensions between form and space,' says Radziner. 'It had to feed right, to be warm and comfortable, but also a place where people could feel inspired.'
